IPEM announces the inaugural Short-Stories and Poetry-Writing Contest!

(maklumat lanjut di http://ipem.wordpress.com)

As we ushered in the New Year, one couldn’t help but notice that the previous year had nonetheless brought us somber news aside from few ones that seemed to bring a little cheer to this already dreary sphere of life that we call home. Perhaps the recently elected President Obama might assist in putting a stop to Islamophobia and terrorism- one can only pray. But with major humanitarian crises sprucing up last year, most notably the grossly asymmetrical Gaza War, one wonders whether world peace and unity are actually viable in this life, and whether the term ‘humane’ is only reserved for beings other than humans, e.g. the humane treatment of animals. Well, what about a humane treatment for fellow humans, for once? With this in mind, we at IPEM hereby announce the inaugural Short-Stories and Poetry-Writing Contest to be held in conjunction with the annual English Week, and the core theme is humanity. You can write about anything at all as long as it’s centered on this particular theme. Deadline for submission will be on the 23rd February 2009. Just to help clarify any confusion, the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines humanity as ‘people in general’ and ‘understanding and kindness towards other people’. Therefore anything about people in general i.e. mother, father, siblings, spouse, children, friend(s), teachers, or fellow humans; and anything concerning the act of kindness and understanding toward other people are gladly welcome. So what are waiting for? Unleash the poet and writer in you now! You might want to start writing…who knows you’ll end up as the winner?? =)

Rules and Regulations:

1. Open to all members of IPEM and PKPMI.

2. All entries must be written in English.

3. All entries must be written according to this year’s theme, which is humanity.

4. Only entries that belong under the category of ‘short stories’ and ‘poetry’ will be judged.

5. Short stories must be within the limit of 1200-2500 words (Not more and not less) OR within the range of 3-6 pages (Times New Roman, size 12, spacing 1.5).

6. Poetry must be within the limit of two (2) pages with no restrictions whatsoever regarding character/line spacing.

7. All entries shall be judged based on theme, content, and grammar.

8. All entries must be the original work of the author, have not been published or shown anywhere, and have not been sent to any other contests. If the entry has been published in your blog, please remove it before the final results are announced.

9. Everyone is welcome to submit as many entries as they wish, but every participant is entitled to only one (1) prize per category. Prizes will be awarded to the champion, first runner up, and second runner up for the respective categories.

10. All copyrights are reserved for the authors, but all submitted entries shall not be returned and the organizers have the right to publish them (in Polaroid/ IPEM blog/ PKPMI) without formal permission from the authors.

11. Please e-mail your entries with your name, batch, and phone number to ipem.makassar@gmail.com with the e-mail subject of ‘English Week’ and followed with category and title of your entry. E.g.: English Week – Poetry – Steadfast Trees. Note: Entries can also be submitted by hand to any IPEM committee members.

12. The closing date for submission is on 23rd February 2009 (at 2400 hours/ 12.00 pm)

13. All rules and regulations are subject to change.
